Temple Blend, Ganavya, Daughter of a Temple

Daughter of a Temple is a sacred, slow-burning meditation from Ganavya, a genre-defying vocalist, teacher, and musician raised in the South Indian Bhakti tradition. With roots in Tamil Nadu and a background spanning Bharatanatyam, jazz, and ethnomusicology, Ganavya bridges devotional depth with an avant-garde edge. 

Temple Blend is a mixture of ground Himalayan Cedar, White Sage and Frankincense Resin. It is different from our other incense because it is a three step process - In the first step, cedar and sage is combined (with makko and acacia gum mixed with water). After it dries thoroughly, it is re-dipped in the acacia gum-water and rolled in powdered frankincense which sticks to the outside. Then it is dipped in acacia gum-water one final time to keep the frankincense from falling off.

Ganavya brings rigor and vulnerability in equal measure. Her voice carries the soil of temple grounds, shaped by prayer and searching. The album was produced by Ganavya Doraiswamy, Esperanza spalding, Rajna Swaminathan, Ryan Renteria, Nils Frahm and Felix Grimm. It was recorded at Moore's Opera House, Houston, Texas. Ganavya holds a PhD in Creative Practice and Critical Inquiry from Harvard University, a graduate degrees in ethnomusicology from UCLA and contemporary performance from Berklee College of Music. 

The album moves without hurry—phrases stretch and breathe. Sung in Tamil and English, it holds grief, forgiveness, and longing in delicate balance. There are no grand climaxes, only subtle unfoldings: drones that hum as memory, sparse piano, distant textures. It exists in stillness, waiting patiently for you to listen with your whole self.
